Barranca del Cobre
UH OH!! We have cancelled this leg of the trip,
gonna
go down there some other time,
but not enough interest showed
up this time.
Copper Canyon
This, the first section of the trip, will be the most difficult, yet should prove to be the most spectacular and rewarding. Beginning at Creel, we will bicycle down into the canyon to the old mining town of Batopilas.
Taking 4 days to ride down, it should not be too very difficult however;
the journey is about a hundred miles, so each day would not be too difficult of a ride.
Getting to Creel will be an adventure in itself - Creel is in the middle of the Canyon and is accessed by one of the most spectacular train routes in the world. The logistics are gonna be a little complicated. From what I have heard, the bicycles will have to be freighted to Creel on a previous train the day before, which will mean staying at least one day either in Chihuahua (from the East) or Los Mochis (from the West).
There are several places to stay in Creel as we prepare for the ride down, the most famous is Dona Marqueritas.
From Batopilas, returning to the top of the canyon to Creel, we will put the bikes on top of the bus for about an 8 hour bus ride back. Then the train back to Chihuahua.
From there we will take the bus to Mexico City for the next leg of the trip.
Considering the difficult and complicated nature of this first part of the trip, everyone who is planning to go on it must let me know, don't forget the discussion board on this site. We will have to do a lot of research and have many details to work out together. If there isn't enough interest in doing this part, we may just leave out this section of the trip altogether, and save our time and money to better enjoy the other parts of our trip.
